Biography
“Inventive and lined with esprit, dramaturgically daring and exciting in terms of content: even long-time regular visitors to the concert series will hardly make a find in their memories if they are looking for an evening in which all of these characteristics were interwoven as artfully and convincingly as in the performance of the Delian Quartet. […] If it needed a proof of the extraordinary class of the ensemble - in these breathless seconds it appeared with the power of a supernova. […] Thanks for opening a new door to the music world.” (Süddeutsche Zeitung)
The namesake of the delian::quartett is the Greek god Apollo, who was revered as the god of the fine arts, the muses, and especially music, and was also called Delian after his birthplace, the island of Delos.
Since its founding in 2007, the delian::quartett has given performances throughout Europe, China, and – as cultural ambassadors of the Goethe-Institut – as far afield as Africa, to great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Its debut at the Berliner Philharmonie in 2009 received a standing ovation after the opening piece already. Since then, the ensemble has been a celebrated guest in venues such as the Konzerthaus Berlin, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Prinzregententheater Munich, Unione Musicale Turin, Konzerthaus and Musikverein Vienna, Tonhalle Zurich, Beethovenfest Bonn, Kissinger Sommer, Ludwigsburg Schlossfestspiele, südtirol festival meran, Rheingau Musik Festival, Salzburg Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival or Schubertiade Roskilde. Its unconventional and evocative programming has long made the delian::quartett's concert projects unmistakable and a trademark of the ensemble.
The quartet enjoys lively collaboration with radio stations such as the SWR, HR, WDR, Catalunya Música, Radio France, Danmarks Radio, BR, NDR, SR, ORF, and Deutschlandfunk. The ensemble's CD recordings for the OehmsClassics label have reached top positions in the classical music charts, been presented as the editor’s choice by various radio stations, and been selected several times for Lufthansa's Album Selection. Its second CD, featuring music by Joseph Haydn, was nominated for an Echo Klassik award in 2010. The acclaimed performance of Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, Op. 21, with the delian::quartett, Liza Ferschtman, and Benjamin Moser was included as a live recording in the 2018 anniversary edition Piano Festival Ruhr. In the same year, the double CD “Cantai” was released, featuring Bach's “The Art of Fugue” and Stefano Pierini's work “Cantai un tempo...” written for the delian::quartett. Among other accolades, this recording received the maximum five stars in the Italian ARCHI magazine and a nomination for the OPUS KLASSIK 2019.
The delian::quartett is deeply committed to expanding its repertoire. It has premiered works by living composers Alberto Colla, Per Arne Glorvigen, Gabriel Iranyi, Christian Jost, Stefano Pierini, and Uljas Pulkkis, most of which have been inscribed to the quartet. In 2019, Aribert Reimann dedicated his last completed work, his adaptation of Schumann's song cycle “Frauenliebe und Leben” (A Woman's Love and Life), to the delian::quartett and soprano Claudia Barainsky, which the artists premiered at the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2024, the legendary label ECM Records released the album “Im wachen Traume”, which includes the first recording of this work amongst others. Described as an “original recording of rare beauty” (nikonland.it), “Im wachen Traume” is a classical music recommendation, must-listen, Choix Musical, or Sélection Disques of various European radio stations and print media, as well as part of the longlist for the German Record Prize. In the Süddeutsche Zeitung, reviewer Wolfgang Schreiber named the album the most beautiful CD of the summer, and Fono Forum magazine awarded it the coveted “Star of the Month” with maximum ratings in all categories.
With “Hey Klassik!”, the Delian format for young people and the young at heart, the ensemble also inspires concert newcomers to classical music. The delian::quartett regularly collaborates with artists and ensembles such as Gilles Apap, Fabio Bidini, Measha Brueggergosman, Gérard Caussé, the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss, Stella Doufexis, Andreas Frölich, Pavel Gililov, Bernd Glemser, Per Arne Glorvigen, the Henschel Quartet, Julia Hülsmann, Ralph Manno, Sergei Nakariakov, Ulrich Noethen, PiedraMudaLAB, Menahem Pressler, Dora Schwarzberg, Peter Shub, Peter Simonischek, Ulrich Tukur, Anatol Ugorski, and Angela Winkler. Until his death in 2019, the Delians shared ten years of their artistic career with the great actor Bruno Ganz in various sensational reading projects.
Since 2017, the members of the delian::quartett appear as Pirastro-Artists and partners of the renowned string manufacturer. Adrian Pinzaru plays a violin by Giovanni Battista Rogeri, 1699, generously loaned by Christine Anderson; Andreas Moscho's violin is the Giovanni Battista Rogeri “Christmas,” circa 1690. The viola by Alfonso Della Corte, 1884, played by Lara Albesano, is on permanent private loan.
